Meta dropped four new ad formats, and most aren't for you yet
On Oct 15, 2026, Meta announced four new brand-advertising products across Facebook and Instagram. The marketing press moved fast, and by the next morning half a dozen "everything Meta just changed" roundups were already live. If you run a D2C brand out of India and sell on Shopify, your first instinct was probably the right one: which of these can I even touch, and does any of it lower my cost per purchase this week?
Here's the honest read. These are brand-building formats, not performance formats. They're built to lift recall and reach, not to pull down your CAC this week. And most of them are either US-only, in early testing, or rolling out in a way that hasn't reached Indian ad accounts. Knowing that upfront saves you from rebuilding a media plan around something you can't run.
The four formats at a glance
Meta grouped the launch into four products: Ads Super Burst, First Impression Ads, Reels Trending Ads, and a measurement tool called Aggregated View Time. Three are placements or buying types; one is a reporting change. Two of the four tie to a single clear use case, which is owning a big moment, and the other two are quieter than the headlines suggest.
What you can actually run from India right now
Before you plan anything, read the status column. A format that's "US test" isn't a format you can brief your media buyer on today.
| Format | What it does | Status (per Meta's Oct 15 note) | Indian D2C relevance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ads Super Burst | Reserve a 3β24 hour window to flood reach, with optional category exclusivity | Phasing in; GA targeted for October 2026 | Highest β a launch or sale-day tool |
| First Impression Ads | One advertiser owns the first ad in Facebook Feed per day | Test, US only | None yet |
| Reels Trending Ads | Place ads right after trending Reels; 15 always-on topics | Expanding (not labelled GA) | Watch β depends on topic fit |
| Aggregated View Time | Totals weekly view time across a brand's content | Early alpha test | Reporting only |
So of four "new" things, exactly one β Ads Super Burst β is close to something an Indian brand can plan around, and even that is "targeted for GA," not confirmed live in every account. Open your own Ads Manager before you promise a founder anything.
Ads Super Burst: the one worth a real look
Ads Super Burst lets you book a concentrated window, anywhere from three to twenty-four hours, to push reach hard across Meta's surfaces. You can optionally buy category exclusivity, which keeps direct competitors out of that window. Meta says early advertisers saw a median 2.9-point lift in ad recall β that's Meta's own figure, measured its own way, so treat it as directional rather than a promise.
When a burst makes sense for D2C
A burst is a moment tool. It earns its place when you have a genuine spike worth owning: a product drop, the first day of a festive sale, a founder-led launch, or a collaboration you've already spent money to create. If you're a skincare or snacking brand launching a new SKU and you've got creative ready and stock in the warehouse, concentrating reach into the first 24 hours can seed the demand that your retargeting then converts over the following week. The category exclusivity angle is the real prize for a crowded festive window β if you can lock a competitor out of the feed on the one day your sale goes live, that's worth more than the raw reach. Just make sure the landing experience and stock can take the spike, because a burst that sends a wave of traffic to an out-of-stock PDP is money set on fire.
When it's a waste
A burst is the wrong tool for steady-state selling. If your account's job this quarter is a stable cost per purchase on evergreen bestsellers, flooding reach for a day mostly buys you expensive impressions and a frequency spike you'll regret. It also assumes you have something to say. Bursting a generic "20% off everything" message into a crowded festive feed won't lift recall the way a real moment does β it just spends faster.
First Impression Ads and Reels Trending Ads: note them, don't plan on them
First Impression Ads
This one owns the very first ad a user sees when they open Facebook Feed, with one advertiser per day. It's a classic awareness land-grab, and it's a US-only test right now. For an Indian D2C brand, there's nothing to do here except file it away. If it reaches India, it'll be a premium-priced reach buy that suits a brand with a real top-of-funnel budget, not a brand squeezing ROAS out of Rs 3 lakh a month.
Reels Trending Ads
More interesting. This lets you run ads right after trending Reels, choosing from 15 always-on topics β Meta added Home & Garden and Spanish-language categories, plus seasonal holiday and sports themes. The appeal is adjacency: your ad sits next to content people are already leaning into. The catch is fit. If none of the topics map to what you sell, adjacency is just a nicer word for random reach. Meta also said custom audience exclusions are expected later this year, which matters if you don't want to pay to re-reach existing customers. Until the topics and controls line up with your catalogue, this is a watch-list item, not a line in next month's plan.
The measurement change most roundups skipped
Aggregated View Time is the quiet one, and it may matter more than the placements. Instead of scoring each view separately, it totals how long people spend with your brand's content across a week. It's in early alpha, so you can't act on it, but the direction is worth noting: Meta is nudging brands to think about attention over a week rather than per-impression. If you've been optimising purely to last-click purchases, a weekly-attention metric is a different lens, closer to how brand demand actually builds. Don't rebuild reporting around a number you can't see yet. Just know it's on the way.
Should brand formats even sit in your D2C budget?
Here's the strategic question underneath the news. Most Indian D2C brands run lean, performance-first accounts: Advantage+ shopping campaigns, catalogue retargeting, a cost cap, and a hard eye on blended ROAS. Brand-awareness formats like these sit uncomfortably in that world because they don't pay back this week.
The answer isn't "ignore brand." It's "size it honestly." A brand doing under roughly Rs 50 lakh a month in ad spend usually can't carve out a meaningful awareness budget without starving the campaigns that actually drive COD and prepaid orders. A brand past that, with a repeatable product and a healthy repeat rate, can afford to spend a slice on moments and recall β and that's exactly where a burst earns its keep. If you want a second opinion on whether your account is ready to add a brand layer without hurting efficiency, that's the kind of call our performance marketing team makes with clients every week.
A simple split for Indian D2C
| Monthly ad spend | Brand-format priority | Where your money should go |
|---|---|---|
| Under Rs 50 lakh | Skip for now | Advantage+ shopping, retargeting, creative testing |
| Rs 50 lakhβ2 cr | Test on moments only | Ads Super Burst for launches and festive peaks |
| Over Rs 2 cr | Build a brand layer | Burst plus steady reach, measured on recall and repeat |
What to do this week
Open Ads Manager and check whether Ads Super Burst is actually available in your account, rather than trusting the headline. If it is, line it up against your next real moment, not your next generic sale. Leave First Impression Ads and Reels Trending Ads on a watch list and revisit when the topics, controls, and India availability catch up. And treat Aggregated View Time as a signal about where Meta's heading, not a metric to chase today.
None of this rewards being first. It rewards matching the tool to the moment and keeping the rest of the account boringly efficient. Check what's live, plan the one format that's close to ready around a moment you genuinely have, and let the US-only tests stay on someone else's to-do list.
