Paid ads rent you traffic. SEO builds you an asset. Every D2C founder knows this in the abstract, yet most treat SEO as a blog nobody reads and then wonder why organic never becomes a real channel. And in 2026 there's a new excuse to give up on it: AI Overviews. Don't. The game changed, but the opportunity didn't shrink — it moved.
Here's the hard data on what changed, and the playbook to turn SEO into a genuine acquisition engine for a D2C brand.
First, face the AI Overviews reality
Google's AI Overviews now sit above the classic blue links on a huge share of searches, and they've taken a real bite out of clicks. A 2026 study of 21.7 million Search Console impressions (Visionary Marketing) found position #1 organic CTR fell from 39.8% to 27.6% once AI Overviews appear — roughly a 30% drop at the very top. Position #2 slid from 18.7% to 12.4%, and #3 from 10.2% to 6.7%.
But the pain isn't evenly spread, and that's the strategic insight. Informational queries lost 55.3% of their position-1 clicks — the "what is / how does" searches AI answers in a box. Navigational queries lost only 8.4%. Transactional and commercial searches — the ones with money behind them — held up far better, because someone ready to buy still clicks through to a store.
The takeaway writes itself: stop pouring everything into thin informational blogs that AI now answers for free, and lean into the buying-intent pages and content that still earn the click.
Start with intent, not keywords
Chasing high-volume keywords was always a losing game; in the AI era it's worse. What matters is matching search intent to the right page:
| Intent | Example query | The page that should rank | AI Overview risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transactional | "buy organic ghee online" | Collection / product page | Low |
| Commercial | "best organic ghee brand India" | Comparison / buying guide | Medium |
| Informational | "benefits of A2 ghee" | Blog article | High |
| Navigational | "YourBrand ghee" | Branded page | Low |
Map every target keyword to its intent and its AI-Overview risk. Weight your effort toward the low-risk, high-value end — and when you do write informational content, make it deep and original enough to be cited rather than replaced.
Fix your money pages first
Most SEO advice jumps straight to blogging. Skip that. Your collection and product pages are where buyers land and convert, they're the least affected by AI Overviews, and they're usually the least optimised part of the whole site.
Collection pages
These target "category + intent" keywords ("men's leather wallets", "sulphate-free shampoo") — the searches with money behind them. Give each one:
- A keyword-aligned H1 and title tag.
- 150–300 words of genuinely useful copy — buying guidance, not keyword stuffing.
- Internal links to related collections and best-sellers.
- Clean, descriptive URLs and breadcrumb navigation.
Product pages
- Unique titles and meta descriptions — never the manufacturer's defaults.
- Benefit-led copy, not a spec dump.
- Product schema (price, availability, reviews) for rich results.
- Real customer reviews on the page — they add unique content and trust in one move.
Fixing 30 collection and product pages usually moves revenue faster than 30 blog posts, because you're optimising the pages buyers already reach — and the ones AI Overviews can't answer for you.
Build topic clusters, not random blogs
For the content you do publish, structure beats volume. Organise it into topic clusters:
- A pillar page — a comprehensive guide to a broad topic ("The Complete Guide to A2 Ghee").
- Cluster posts — focused articles on subtopics that each link back to the pillar.
This signals topical authority to Google — you don't just mention a topic, you own it — and it's exactly the kind of structured, thorough content answer engines pull from when they build an Overview. Being the source that gets cited is the new front page.
Write to be cited, not just ranked
Since AI now summarises the shallow stuff, the winning content is the kind AI can't replace:
- Original data, your own results, and real customer questions — things that exist nowhere else.
- Clear, direct answers early in the page, with a logical H2/H3 structure the machines can parse.
- Genuine expertise and a point of view, not a rewrite of the top 10 results.
- FAQ and how-to sections with schema, so you're eligible for rich results and citations.
Generic, spun content doesn't just rank poorly now — it gets absorbed into an Overview with no click for you.
The technical basics you can't skip
You don't need to be a developer, but these must be right:
- Site speed — Core Web Vitals affect both rankings and conversions. Compress images, lazy-load, cut unused scripts.
- Mobile-first — Google indexes the mobile version, and most Indian D2C traffic is mobile. It has to be flawless.
- Crawlability — a clean XML sitemap, sensible robots.txt, no orphan pages.
- Structured data — Product, Article, FAQ and Breadcrumb schema, so search engines and answer engines understand your pages.
- Clean URLs and internal links — logical hierarchy, descriptive slugs, zero broken links.
Product Schema: Getting Product JSON-LD Right
Product structured data tells Google exactly what you sell, so your listings can qualify for rich results with price, availability and star ratings. For a D2C store, add Product JSON-LD to every product page and nest the key properties correctly.
- Offer: price, priceCurrency (INR), availability (InStock/OutOfStock) and a priceValidUntil date.
- AggregateRating: ratingValue and reviewCount, shown only when real reviews exist on the page.
- Review: individual reviews with author and reviewRating.
- Brand: your brand name, kept consistent everywhere.
The non-negotiable rule is consistency. Price, currency, availability and GTIN in your JSON-LD must match what a shopper sees on the page and what you send in your Google Merchant Center feed. Mismatches trigger warnings in Search Console and Merchant Center, and can suppress rich results. Never mark up ratings that are not visible on the page. Validate every template with the Rich Results Test before shipping, and re-check after any theme or app update that touches product markup.
Core Web Vitals for Ecommerce Stores
Core Web Vitals are Google's three page-experience metrics, and slow stores lose both rankings and conversions. Learn what each one measures before you optimise.
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how fast the main content, usually the product image, renders. Aim under 2.5 seconds.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how responsive the page feels when a shopper taps add-to-cart or opens a filter. Aim under 200 milliseconds.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much the layout jumps as it loads. Aim under 0.1.
On a typical Shopify or WooCommerce store, LCP improves when you compress and correctly size hero images, serve modern formats like WebP, preload the main image and cut render-blocking scripts. INP improves by trimming heavy apps and third-party tags that block the main thread. CLS improves by reserving space for images, banners and fonts so nothing shifts. Many Indian shoppers browse on mid-range phones over patchy mobile networks, so test on real devices and throttled connections, not just a fast office laptop. Track field data in Search Console, not lab scores alone.
How SEO fits your wider funnel
SEO doesn't live alone. Informational content captures researchers at the top of the funnel; you then retarget those visitors with Meta and Google ads, and capture them into our CRM Hub with email and WhatsApp opt-ins. Organic becomes both a standalone channel and a cheap top-of-funnel feeder for your paid and retention engines.
That's the real unlock: SEO as one lever in a connected system, not an island. Face the AI-Overviews reality, weight your effort toward money pages and citeable depth, own a few topic clusters, and keep the technical foundation clean — and within a couple of quarters organic quietly becomes one of the most profitable channels you have.
