For two years the SEO conversation has been about staying visible as AI ate the search results — how to get your brand cited inside a ChatGPT or Gemini answer instead of a blue link. That's still worth doing. But in late 2025 the goalposts moved again, and this time it's bigger than visibility. People can now buy your product without ever leaving the chat.
On 29 September 2025, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT. A shopper can ask for a recommendation, get shown real products, and complete the purchase in a few taps — no click through to your website, no separate checkout page. For D2C brands this is a genuinely new storefront, and the ones who understand it early will be recommended and bought while everyone else is still optimising blog posts. Here's how AI shopping works, how it differs from getting cited, and what an Indian D2C brand should do to get in.
From getting cited to getting bought
The old AI-search game was about mentions. You wrote helpful content, earned trust signals, and hoped ChatGPT name-dropped your brand when someone asked "best cold-pressed oil in India." Useful, but soft — a mention isn't a sale, and you had no idea if it led anywhere.
AI shopping is harder-edged. When ChatGPT surfaces a product and lets someone buy it on the spot, the question stops being "did it mention me?" and becomes "did it pick my product, and could the shopper actually check out?" That raises the bar. A citation forgives a stale price or a vague spec. A purchase does not — if your feed says in stock at ₹899 and reality disagrees, the sale breaks and your brand looks careless.
| Getting cited (AEO) | Getting bought (AI shopping) | |
|---|---|---|
| The win | A mention in an answer | A completed purchase |
| What it rewards | Helpful content, trust signals | Accurate product data, reviews, checkout readiness |
| Tolerance for stale data | Forgiving | Unforgiving — price and stock must be live |
| Where the sale happens | Your website, later | Inside the chat, now |
| Who's eligible | Anyone with content | Merchants on supported platforms |
How Instant Checkout actually works
Instant Checkout is built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard OpenAI co-developed with Stripe and open-sourced on launch day. Stripe powers the payment, but the design point matters more than the plumbing: OpenAI has been explicit that merchants keep full control of their payments, systems and customer relationships. You're not handing your customer to a marketplace. You're adding a doorway where the shopping conversation already happens.
At launch, the feature handled single-item purchases, with multi-item carts flagged as coming next. Etsy's US sellers were available immediately, and OpenAI named Shopify's base of over a million merchants — brands like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx and Vuori among them — as next in line. Merchants apply through OpenAI's dedicated programme rather than being switched on automatically.
Why the Shopify rollout matters for India
A large slice of Indian D2C runs on Shopify. That's the single most important fact here, because it means eligibility for many Indian brands is a question of when, not whether. As the Shopify rollout widens, the brands that already have clean feeds, strong reviews and accurate pricing will slot in and start earning AI-driven sales. The brands with messy catalogues will be technically eligible and practically invisible.
What Indian D2C brands should do now
You can't force your way into a rollout that's still expanding. What you can do is be so ready that the moment eligibility reaches you, you convert. Almost all of this is work that helps your ordinary store too, so none of it is wasted effort.
Fix your product data first
AI shopping lives or dies on structured product information. Every SKU needs an accurate title, a clear description, correct pricing in rupees, live stock status, and proper categorisation. Add Product structured data to your product pages so machines read them cleanly. If your feed drifts from reality — wrong price, sold-out items marked available — you'll lose the sale at the worst possible moment, right at checkout inside the chat.
Make your reviews and trust signals unmissable
When an AI recommends between three similar products, social proof does the deciding. Genuine ratings, review counts and clear return policies aren't decoration — they're inputs the model weighs. A D2C brand with hundreds of honest reviews and transparent policies is a safer recommendation than a nameless listing, and AI systems lean toward safe recommendations.
Get your checkout and catalogue platform-ready
Keep your Shopify catalogue tidy and your payment setup healthy, and apply through OpenAI's merchant programme as soon as your region and platform qualify. Treating AI shopping as a real channel — with an owner, a feed-quality standard, and someone watching the rollout — is exactly the kind of always-on growth work our growth marketing team runs for D2C brands, so a new storefront becomes revenue instead of a missed memo.
How an AI decides which product to surface
You can't see the ranking rules, and OpenAI hasn't published a scoring formula — so treat what follows as informed reasoning, not a leaked algorithm. Still, the logic of a system that has to recommend a purchasable product points clearly in one direction. An AI that stakes its usefulness on good recommendations will lean toward products it can describe accurately and stand behind: items with complete, structured data, believable reviews, clear pricing and dependable availability. Ambiguity is risk, and a recommendation engine avoids risk.
That's why the preparation work isn't guesswork even when the ranking is opaque. A product with a precise title, a rich description, correct specifications, live stock and a wall of genuine reviews gives the model everything it needs to recommend you with confidence. A thin, half-filled listing gives it reasons to pick someone else. You're not gaming a secret system — you're removing every excuse it has to skip you.
Measure it as a real channel
Once you're eligible, treat AI-driven sales like any other channel with a number attached. Watch how much revenue arrives through the ChatGPT storefront, tag it in your analytics where you can, and review it monthly rather than treating it as a novelty. A channel you don't measure is a channel you'll under-invest in — and the brands that take AI shopping seriously as a line item will out-learn the ones treating it as a gimmick.
Don't abandon what already works
AI shopping is additive, not a replacement. Most of your revenue in 2026 still comes from your own store, Meta, Google and WhatsApp — and clean product data helps every one of those channels, not only ChatGPT. So treat this as one more surface that rewards the fundamentals you should be nailing anyway: accurate feeds, honest reviews, live pricing and a trustworthy brand.
The shift is real, though, and it's early enough to matter. Getting cited kept you visible. Getting bought inside the chat is where AI search finally turns into revenue — and the Indian D2C brands preparing their catalogues today are the ones who'll be recommended, and purchased, tomorrow.
